The AGM will be followed by the Ressers Christmas Quiz and Social. George the Quiz Master will be rustling up some festive questions and if that’s not enticing enough, Tony at A Wright Butchers on Hucknall Road and Rob at Bar Deux are raffling a Turkey and if we get organised there may even be a veg box for you veggies.

So there you have it, book the baby sitter and get yourself down to deux for some festive fun and frolics.

Just a quick line to let you know that we ( Police, CPSO, Streetscene, Councillors and Neighbourhood Action officer ) will be around the area on Tuesday December 9th between 11.00 a.m. – 1.00 p.m. looking at levels of street cleanliness/ fly tipping., pot holes etc. If any residents wish to highlight any matters of concern in the area they can let me know or join us on our walk.

Transition Forest Fields is screening The Power of community – How Cuba Survived peak oil, this Wednesday, 3 December at Djanogoly City Academy, Sherwood Rise at 7.30pm. Entrance to the screening is free.

 27th November 2008  at the New Art Exchange will long be a date that will go down in SRRA history. The Sherwood Rise Residents’ Association was awarded Neighbourhood Project of the Year Award for thier Stuff of Life community festival by the Partnership Council as part of their BIG 10 celebration of whats best in the local community. What is The Big Tidy UP?

Nobody likes litter. Now, communities across the country are declaring war on the rubbish that blights our open spaces in Britain’s largest ever clear up. The Big Tidy Up 2008, organised by Keep Britain Tidy, aims to make the UK a better place to live by bringing communities together to tackle the trash. BTCV is lending a hand, organising 50 neighbourhood litter-picking events across the country.

The Sherwood Rise Residents’ Association has agreed to take part­ in the clear up and has organised its own event which will take place on Saturday 8 November from 10.30am – 12.00pm. The plan is to meet at Hedley Park, don some high vis jackets, grab some litter pickers then blitz the surrounding streets of litter, with a spot of musical accompaniment if you are in the mood! City council wants to shut pub

NOTTINGHAM City Council wants to shut a pub that it says has caused a persistent nuisance to neighbours.
The Elm Tree Inn, in Forest Fields, was the scene of a shooting in January last year.

In February that year, the council restricted the hours for entertainment to between 2pm and 11pm and a noise limiter was fitted, following complaints from residents.

But 12 months on, residents complained again that the noise, sometimes late at night, was unacceptable.

Now, after a six-month investigation in which officers gathered evidence of noise nuisance, the council has asked for a licence review.

In a submission to the city’s licensing department, Barry Horne, the council’s corporate director of city development, said: “The evidence gained led noise and pollution control to believe that it is highly unlikely that the Elm Tree could be managed in a manner that does not continue to cause noise nuisance.”

The pub in Beech Avenue is closed pending the review. The owner, Trust Inns Limited, said no one was available to comment. Local people are hoping the review will lead to its closure.

One man who has lived in the street for 51 years, but did not want to be named, said the venue had changed in the last decade and was no longer appropriate in a residential area.

He said: “It is attracting unwelcome clientele. The music has been a problem. We can hear it in the house.” Late-night taxis, urinating in the street, and litter were also problems, he said. “This is affecting a lot of people.”

Neighbours are annoyed that the authorities were not in a position to take tougher action in the aftermath of the shooting. The council could only challenge on the grounds of excessive noise.

The man who was shot, Cameron McKenzie, 22, of Bracknell Crescent, Whitemoor Estate, was admitted to the Queen’s Medical Centre. He was released a few days later.

The neighbour said: “Since trading has been suspended there has been a wonderful transformation. It has improved the quality of life tremendously.”

What are we looking for?
The BIG10 Awards are all about celebrating, recognising and rewarding the contribution that people make to their communities. You can nominate yourself, someone else or a community group, project or business. For example, do you know of an individual or activity that has transformed your community or others’ lives? Or someone who volunteers tirelessly to help others?

1. Volunteer of the Year Award – do you know someone who gives up their time to help others?
2. Green Project of the Year Award – a project or activity aimed at helping the environment or encouraging or helping others to lead greener lives.
3. Young Person of the Year Award – we’re looking for a young person, up to 25 years old, who has made a really positive contribution to their neighbourhood or others’ lives.
4. Partnership Worker of the Year Award – someone who works for a public sector organisation such as Nottingham City Council, the Police or Health Service who goes beyond the call of duty.
5. Older Person of the Year Award – life begins at 50 in this case so why not nominate someone you know who’s helping to change the area where you live?
6. Community Group of the Year Award – are you part of a community group that’s made a HUGE difference to people’s lives or is doing something really special or unusual?

Winners will receive a BIG10 Awards certificate and a prize.

If you are short-listed for an award we will tell you in plenty of time so you can arrange to attend the Awards Ceremony, or send a representative on your behalf. Winners of each category will be announced at the Awards Ceremony. The decisions taken by the judges will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
We can only consider applications answering our official nomination form questions.

Following the success of opening the Stuff of Life Community Festival, the Community choir will reconvene on Thursday 6 November from 6-7pm. Kate has negotiated a free room at the New Art Exchange on Gregory Boulevard up until Christmas.

Stuff of Life Festival 2008

Due to other commitments, our leader, Angela Warren, will be unable to join us until the New Year but between us we should be able to muster up a few tunes. Vera has  a new Bulgarian song, we can perfect our earlier songs and all are welcome to bring some new songs to the mix.

Kate has found some New Deal funding that we can apply for to pay for a ‘leader’, room hire, music and refreshments which means if we are successful in our bid we could have funding by January.
